Open contact on a distal-occlusal, found at the review appointment, with the patient already flossing food out of it? Everything else about a posterior composite can be adjusted; the contact cannot. SwissMat™ is a complete sectional matrix system which PD describe as designed to recreate anatomical contact points in case of Class II cavities – and this kit is the whole thing in one box: bands in three heights, wedges in four sizes, the separation ring and its forceps.

› Concave edge to the occlusal. That is PD's one placement instruction for the band, and it is the one people get back to front.
› Bands and wedges are single-use and cannot be sterilised. The ring, tines and forceps are reusable, supplied non-sterile, and must be sterilised before first use.
› The sequence is prepare, band, wedge, ring, burnish, restore, remove with the forceps, then finish and polish.

What does the kit not include?
Tines in L, and refills. The ring is one, so a second quadrant in the same appointment means a second ring – which is what the refill set is for.

How many restorations will it do?
125 bands and 100 wedges, so on paper around a hundred restorations before a refill. In practice the bands go first, and which height goes first depends entirely on your case mix.
