A wedge that gives way to the papilla instead of flattening it

How much of the bleeding at the end of a Class II came from the caries, and how much from the wedge? A solid wedge has one shape and the interdental space has to accept it. The SwissMat™ V-wedge is hollow: PD's own description is that the V-shape allows them to compress and adapt to the interproximal anatomy of the teeth, preventing damage to the papilla. This pack is a hundred, in assorted sizes.

› Insert firmly at the gingival margin, which is PD's instruction, and place it before the ring rather than after.
› The ring seats over the wedge, as far gingivally as it will go – the two are doing one job between them.
› Rubber dam is mandatory with this system. A wedge is small, and PD's warning about ingestion and aspiration covers it.

Why assorted rather than one size?
Because embrasures are not one size. Four sizes exist precisely so that the wedge can be chosen after you have seen the space, rather than the space having to accept the wedge you had.

Do they seal the cervical margin?
PD do not claim that, and nor do we. What they describe is compression, adaptation and protection of the papilla – the seal is the band's job, helped by burnishing.
