Every reading the motor gives you runs through this clip

Scouting with a hand file or reading length while you shape – both circuits close at the lip. The file clip is optional depending on how you work; the lip clip never is. Five to a pack is the number that lets one sit on the patient, one come out of the pouch and the rest wait their turn, which is what a back-to-back endodontic list actually needs.

Placement is most of the accuracy

›  Dentsply Sirona are specific about where it sits: “Place the lip clip in the labial angle opposite the tooth to be treated”, in good contact with the oral mucosa. Poor mucosal contact is the first listed cause of an unsteady scale.
›  Keep it off metal. The instructions ask for particular care with metallic crowns, bridges and large fillings – any contact between the clip or the file and metal can short the circuit.
›  The canal has to conduct too. Their line is simply that the canal must be wet enough for the measurement to be reliable; an extremely dry canal is listed as a cause of no signal at all.
›  Disconnect the clip from the patient before the cable comes out of the device. That is the order the instructions give.

Questions we get asked

Why five rather than two?
Because a clip out of circulation is a clip in the autoclave. Two is what the box gives you and it works for one case at a time; a list needs a clip on the patient and a clip coming clean behind it.

Can I use a rubber dam with it?
Yes, and Dentsply Sirona recommend it – the instructions say a rubber dam system is highly recommended to improve the efficiency of the integrated apex locator. The clip still goes on the lip, outside the dam.
