Before the glide path: XA, the accessory opener

XA is not one of the five shaping files. It is an ISO 019 instrument on a fixed .035 taper that opens the orifice and the coronal third, so the shaping files meet a canal they can follow rather than one they have to fight. XA comes in one length, 19 mm, because it works the orifice and the coronal third rather than the full canal.

Speed and torque from the June 2025 EU IFU, which supersedes the wider range quoted in the 2017 brochure.

Key features

›  What Dentsply Sirona say it is for. Verbatim: “Recommended for preflaring the orifice, removing triangles of dentin, relocating the coronal aspect of a canal away from an external root concavity, and creating more shape as desired.”
›  Where it sits in the sequence. The 2025 IFU places it after working length and patency are confirmed and before the glide path is expanded. It is not taken to working length.
›  One length, 019 on a .035 taper. XA is made in 19 mm only, which is what an orifice instrument needs and no more.
›  Its own torque. 300 rpm at 3–4 Ncm in the 2025 IFU – higher than the 2–3 Ncm the same document gives X1 to X5.
›  Sterile and single use. The 2025 IFU states STERILE – STERILIZED BY RADIATION, and that the instruments “are single use devices and cannot be reused”.

Questions we get asked

What settings?
300 rpm at 3–4 Ncm, from the June 2025 IFU. The 2017 brochure quotes 2–5.2 Ncm across the whole family and a US technique card quotes 4–5.2 Ncm; we follow the current IFU. Both X-Smart® Pro+ and X-Smart® Pro will run it.

Can they be re-used?
No. The IFU is explicit: single use devices that cannot be reused, supplied sterile, sterilised by radiation. Re-use raises the risk of cross-contamination and of breakage.

Where does XA sit in the sequence?
Step six of the IFU’s own list, after working length is confirmed and before the glide path is expanded – to preflare the orifice, remove triangles of dentine, relocate the coronal aspect of a canal away from an external root concavity and improve radicular access. It is a 19 mm instrument and is not taken to working length.
